A passive voice is a type of a clause or sentence in which an action (through verb), or an object of a sentence, is emphasized rather than its subject. Simply, the subject receives the action of the verb. The emphasis or focus is on the action, while the subject is not known or is less important.
Passive voice function are to describe a process, to convey a more objective tone i news reports, and more academic or other more formal settings such as letters, reports, essays, and lectures.
There are several times where a passive voice is useful. For example, we use passive voice when :
- We want to emphasize the receiver of the action.
- We don't know who did the action.
- We think the agent is not important or interesting.
- The agent is obvious.
- The agent is eveyone.
- We are making general statements or announcements.
- We are writing a formal or scientific texts.
- We want to avoid responsibility for our own actions (typically found in government reports)
And this is the formula of passive voice.

- I noticed that a window had been left open.
- Every year thousands of people are killed on our roads.
- All the cookies have been eaten.
