Samples of Social Functions of Songs

- To entertain listeners

- To express the deepest feelings such as, sadness, happiness, of the singer

- To express disagreement, disapproval, motivation, and opposition

- To express love for his/her country

- To honor a someone

- As a soundtrack to strengthen the theme of a movie, an advertisement, etc.

- To lead people's mood into an event such as, a wedding party, a birthday celebration, a funeral, etc.

Figurative Language in Songs

- Simile

A simile is a figure of speech that compares two unlike things and uses the words “like” or “as” and they are commonly used in everyday communication.

- Metaphor

A metaphor is a statement that compares two things that are not alike. 

- Hyperbole

Hyperbole is an exaggeration that is created to emphasize a point or bring out a sense of humor.

- Personification

Personification is the attribution of human characteristics to non-living objects.

- Synecdoche

Synecdoche is a type of figurative language that uses one part to refer to the whole, or the whole to refer to the part.
